LINEUP
7 SETH IVEY 3B
.288 / .341 OB% / .363 SLG / 6 D / .878 FLD %
Hatchell: “What Seth’s done as a lead-off is show patience. He won’t swing at the first strike. He’ll make a pitcher throw pitches. That way, everybody in the dugout gets to see what he’s throwing, how fast he’s throwing, where his location is. He’s been doing what you want a lead-off batter to do. He’s been hitting line drives and getting on base. He’s been a great lead-off guy.”

6 WILLIAM HIGGINSON CF
.299 / .315 OB% / .356 SLG / 9 SB / .921 FLD %
Hatchell: “William is a character, number one. He’s always talking and always has something to say — in a good way. He’s a big rah-rah guy, and I like that about him. He gets the guys excited and pumped up. Man, he’s exciting to watch. He covers a lot of ground in centerfield, a lot more ground than you’d expect a high school kid to cover. At the plate, it’s always an adventure because I’ve given him the green light to bunt whenever he wants to. Then, it’s scary sometimes, too, when he hits a line drive for a single because he rounds that base hard. He’s aggressive, and I want him to be. If he makes a mistake, I want him to make one being aggressive.”
———
2 DONDRE McCARTER C
.302 / .355 OB% / .453 SLG / 15 RBI / 10 D / 8 SB / .978 FLD %
Hatchell: “Dondre is our leader. Catching, he makes sure everybody knows what they’re doing and in the right spot. He doesn’t mind taking the time, in the middle of the game if we’re in a tight spot, to just stop and tell everybody where they need to be and what they need to be doing. At the plate, he’s just been solid. He hits line drives, he drives in runs, he’s a guy who doesn’t strike out a lot. He usually puts the ball in play, and when he does, you better get it up quick and make a throw because I would say he’s the fastest guy on our team.”
———
23 STUART MILLS 2B/SS
.392 / .483 OB % / .554 SLG / 24 RBI / 9 D / .892 FLD %
Hatchell: “He hits the ball hard. (Assistant coach) Cliff Dew said that was the first kid he threw batting practice to that scared him. He said to me, ‘I’m behind the cage and the ball can’t get to me, but I’m afraid the ball might go through the screen.’”
———
10 LUKE GUHY SS
.209 / .240 OB % / .254 SLG / 11 RBI / .874 FLD %
Hatchell: “He’s one of our leaders. In the past two weeks, I haven’t seen a shortstop play the position the way Luke Guhy has. Nothing gets by him. He makes plays in the hole to his right, to his left, he charges balls. And, when he throws, it’s just like football — he hits the guy in the chest every time. He’s one of those guys who struggled at the plate early on, but he’s come on and now is hitting line drives. He’ll do what it takes to get the job done. He leads the team in sac flies (4).”
———
14 CHASE SEVIC 2B/DH
.341 / .444 OB % / .409 SLG / 11 RBI / .833 FLD %
Hatchell: “He’s one of the most clutch players I’ve ever seen. Everytime we’ve needed something to happen at the plate in late innings and he’s up, he makes it happen. Time after time after time, Chase Sevic has been at the plate in a clutch situations, and he’s delivered. You look at him doing all that, and you have to think that he has experience, but he’s just a freshman. He’s doing that now, and I’m excited about his future.”
———
1 MARC WYNSTRA LF
.276 / .311 OB % / .276 SLG / 11 RBI / .889 FLD %
Hatchell: “He’s probably the most improved player on our team this year. Before Spring Break and even the week after, his batting average was around .100. He was really struggling just to put the ball in play. I told the whole team that we were going to go back and retool everybody’s swing, figure out what we’re doing wrong and fix it because we have to start hitting the baseball. After that first practice, Marc has worked harder than anyone on this team on what he had to do to hit the baseball.”
———
4 CLAY SWEATMAN RF
.231 OB % / .267 SLG % / .885 FLD %
Hatchell: “Three years ago, I wan’t sure what we were going to do with Clay. He’d played infield his whole life, and coming in after his sophomore year, I knew he was a good baseball player, but he was not our best infielder. I thought that if we leave him at second base, he’s probably not going to play. But, he’s good enough to play somewhere, so we have to find him a place. I told him I wanted him to try right field. He came out after the season was over, woorking with me three days a week in the summer with me just hitting him fly balls. We just worked on playing right field. He came to me after the third day and said it was really comfortable out there, so I told him that’s where he was going to play. At the plate, he may not be our best hitter, but it seems more often than not when he’s up and we need to get a rally started, he hits the baseball.”
———
13 TAYLOR SULLIVAN or 17 AUSTIN CLARK / 1B
Hatchell, on Sullivan: “Taylor’s a good kid who’s solid player and solid leader for us. He works hard and does a good job of supporting his teammates when they’re doing well and not doing well. He doesn’t get too high or too low, and you need guys who stay an even keel because they don’t let things bother them.”
———
25 TYLER HALL 1B (Defense)
1.000 FLD % / 26 Chances / 26 Put-outs
Hatchell: “I wish his feet were as quick as his hands. He’s probably the best fielding first baseman we have. He’s just so good with his hands. It’s almost like that when someone throws the ball to first, he knows where it’s going before it gets there, whether it’s going to tail in or be low or high. He’s already a good player for us now, and I feel as he grows more and his body develops, he’s going to be a great player for us. He plays an unbelievable first base.”
———
8 SHAIN ROSS and 11 LUKE WYNSTRA (Courtesy Runners)
Hatchell, on Ross: “He’s a smart kid. I think he’s only made one mistake running the bases all year. He’s a kid who’s talented enough to be on the field, but there are just some other players in front of him. He’s never complained. He’s simply taken to his role and done everything he can to make the team better. Those are the kind of kids you want on a team.”
Hatchell, on Wynstra: “Being a freshman, he’s showing signs of getting better in all areas of the game. We’re able to use him as a courtesy runner or pinch runner because he’s so smart. We can put put him out there and feel comfortable because knows the game. He knows situational baseball.”

ROTATION
17  AUSTIN CLARK
2-4 / 4.12 ERA / 34 K / 47 BB
Hatchell: “Austin is the kid I’ve been most proud of this season because he’s gone through things you wouldn’t wish a kid to go through. He was struggling, and he came to me and said, ‘Coach, it’s my senior season, and I don’t want my senior season to be a complete waste. I want to focus, I want to get things right, and I want to change what I’m doing.’ And, this is the last week of the season when he comes to me and says this. I said ‘OK, let’s work.’ We went to work on his mechanics and we sat down for a long time and talked about where his focus needed to be on the mound and how he needed to go through things in his mind. I was really nervous for him when we went to Lone Oak and played a doubleheader. He was going to start the second game, and I was nevous for him because I thought if he had a bad game then he’d say that we had gone through all this and done all we could do and might give up. He went out there and pitched the way we knew he could pitch and he knew he could pitch. Since then, he’s just been a monster on the mound. He’s almost been impossible to hit.”
———
10 LUKE GUHY
5-2 / 3.45 ERA / 54 K / 32 BB
Hatchell: “I never dreamed he’d be as solid as he has been. He’s not going to blow it by you with his fastball, but he has a good breaking ball and he throws strikes. His fastball has a lot of movement on it and is hard to hit. More often than not, he’s ahead in the count and then can throw whatever he wants and keep batters guessing.”
———
23 STUART MILLS
3.41 ERA / 4 CG / 39 K / 32 BB
Hatchell: “Stuart throws harder than all of them. And, when you have Austin at 6-4 and Luke at 6-2, and then you have Stuart at, what, 5-6. The angle of the pitches are different, too. Not to knock his height, but because he’s shorter, his pitches come out at a different angle. It looks different to a batter. His two best pitches are he fastball and change-up.”
———
2 DONDRE McCARTER
3-2 / 1.24 ERA / 40 K / 11 BB
Hatchell: “Throw Dondre in there, and you’re talkiing about a fourth arm angle because he’s a three-quarter guy. His fastball moves, and curve breaks sharp away.”
