Northmont struck first, getting three short touchdown runs from senior running back Gaven Kenerly to pounce on Princeton, 24-14. “This means a lot,” the senior said. “It means that we’re on the right track” It didn’t take Wayne long to make an opening statement in a 30-20 defeat of Winton Woods. Sophomore Devin Reed, a transfer from Centerville, lofted a bomb to Jesse Bray that went for an 80-yard TD strike on the opening play from scrimmage. In the opener, Springfield spotted Hamilton a 24-point advantage, then rallied but fell 31-28. The Wildcats scored the final 21 points as QB Chris Wallace completed nine passes for 201 yards and a TD. “We challenged them at halftime,” assured Springfield coach Eric Gillespie about his Wildcats’ debut. Valley View and Dunbar played in the nightcap. Today, Trotwood-Madison plays University (Fla.) at 3 p.m. at Kings (ESPN).
