On Nov. 9 at Cambridge-Isanti H.S., senior Whitney Olson signed her name to play women’s basketball at Wayne State College for the 2012-13 season. Wayne State, a Div. II program, is located in Wayne, Nebraska. The Wildcats were ranked 9th in the nation beginning this season and are the defending champs in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).

Whitney Olson signed her scholarship agreement to play at Wayne State on Nov. 9. Also pictured are (back, l-r) Coach Jody Ledahl, brother Chris Olson, parents Shannon & Maria Olson, and grandparents Mary & Al Anlauf.

“The program is just really good, and I wanted to go somewhere where I could get a ring– that’s one of my goals,” spoke Olson on what led to her school choice. “I really like the coaching staff a lot– just from the first time I talked with them. They are strict on basketball, but then they know it’s about having fun, too, and keeping good grades is important there, too. Wayne is a small-college town, too, and I like that because it’s kind of like home.”

The NSIC has Minnesota college members such as St. Cloud State, Southwest State and Bemidji State, so her family should have several opportunities to see Wildcat games without too much travel.

“I would like to thank my parents for all the time and money they put into my basketball, and to my grandparents for coming to my games. I also want to thank Coach Ledahl, Coach Kurowski and Coach Braaten for coaching me, and giving me the playing time.”

“I’d like to send sincere congratulations to Whitney upon her early signing to Wayne State,” spoke C-I girls basketball head coach Jody Ledahl. “Whitney has put in an amazing amount of time and effort into fulfilling her dream of becoming a college basketball player. Today is a big step into fulfilling that dream.”

Heading into this season, Olson owns the single season scoring record for the Bluejackets (482), along with team records for free throw percentage, three-pointers made in a season and career. She is approaching the all-time scoring record for the program and was the Mississippi 8 Conference Most Valuable Player last season.

“It’s a lot of hard work to get to where you are right now,” spoke Dist. 911 Activities Director Mark Solberg to Whitney at the signing ceremony. “You’ve accomplished a great deal as an athlete and most importantly as an academician. You’re a great student.”

Asked what she can bring to the Wayne State program, Olson responded, “My shooting and scoring. I feel like I’m pretty good at creating team chemistry and getting others to take in more free shooting time at the gym. I want to help win a championship.”
