Big Reds suffer heart-breaking defeat; playoff run comes to an end

Centerville's first loss of the season came in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A state playoffs. Pella, who scored their third upset victory of the playoffs, were able to withstand a 270-yard night from Tanner Susin to capture a victory and improve their record to 9-3 as they head to the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, IA for the semifinal round.
Both teams were well represented in the stands as one of the largest crowds for a high school football game showed up for the highly anticipated rematch. As the game kicked off, fans filled both stands and were four rows deep at time nearly all the way around the outside of gates of the football field.
Centerville scored seven points in the first quarter on a 43-yard touchdown run by Susin, setting Centerville's best rusher over the 2,000-yard plateu for the season. Thaler Carter completed the drive with a sucessful PAT attempt as 8:00 remained in the first quarter of the game.
Pella's Blain Forsythe, who had kicked the winning field goal to allow the team to advance to the next round last Monday, came in with 1:44 remaining the first quarter to kick a three-point field goal from 37 yards out.
With 3:26 left in the second quarter, Quarterback Tyler Gray through and interception to Pella's Spencer Boeyink, who returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. A sucessful PAT kick put Pella ahead 10-7.
Those points didn't go unanswered as Centerville's Susin capped off an impresive offensive push with a 27-yard run for his second TD of the night with just 0:53 remaining in the first half. The drive was good for only six points, however, as Carter missed the extra point attempt.
Jordan McCoy grabbed his sixth interception of the season with 0:13 to go in the second. Gray took a knee to send the teams into the half with Centerville leading 13-10.
The third quarter saw Pella scoring seven additional points when Matt Meyers ran in for a 2-yard touchdown to cap off the Little Dutch's latest offensive drive with 5:37 remaining in the third.
After a sucessful PAT by Forsythe, Pella regained the lead 17-13.
Pella was able to hold Centerville for a scoreless third quarter. However, Centerville was first to strike with 6:47 left in regulation.
Susin collected his third touchdown of the night to pull ahead by the score of 20-17 after Carter kicked his second sucessful PAT of the night.
Pella then set up an impressive drive to pull back ahead 24-20 with just 2:33 left in the game.
The Big Reds's offense couldn't get restarted when the 2:00 mark in the fourth quarter came around. Pella was able to get the ball back from Centerville with just a few seconds remaining to complete the game with any football team's favorite play—a simple QB kneel.
The Big Reds left the field with their heads hanging as their dream season came to an end against the school's biggest rival. However, it was a still a history-making year as the Big Reds became the first team in school history to capture 11 wins in a season.
Susin retires as far as his high school football career as the Big Reds's leading rusher in school history with over 2,100 yards of rushing throughout the season.
The Big Reds beat Pella in nearly every statistic except one — penalties. The Big Reds gave up 49 yards on five penalties while Pella wasn't the cause for a single yellow flag to hit their professional-style field turf during the night.
In the end, Pella was able to take advantage of the Big Reds's mistakes to make their 147-yard offensive game a victory.
Ethan Moorman (sprained ankle) played one series on defense, with Chris Schacher starting and playing for Moorman's defensive position for the duration of the game. Mike England, who is usually a linebaker for the Big Reds, filed in for Moorman's halfback duties on the offensive side and rushed for a total of 61 yards.
For Pella, Blake Boggard, Kicker and Wide Receiver, was limited with an injury but did play a couple of series for the Dutch. Meyers took his place for much of the game.
Pella will continue on the UNI-Dome to play New Hampton (10-2) in the semifinal round of the Class 3A playoffs on November 16.
