Byrnes Freshman Academy school cafe is open and serving before school

March 28, 2014
James F Byrnes Freshman Academy

Byrnes Freshman Academy (BFA has a school café at the beginning of school from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.. The café opened on March 24, 2014 and closes on April 4th.

The café sells cinnabons for $3 and coffee for $1 to raise money for Relay for Life to fight cancer.

These items cannot be purchased during school hours because there are standard guidelines for food and nutrition in schools, especially at lunch time. However, the fundraiser guidelines are not as strict since the café is open before school hours.

Lunch guidelines state that beverages for high school students are some of the following, according to the “Federal, State, & Industry Rules on Beverage Sales in U.S. Schools, (last updated March 2012)”:

  • Bottled water (any size);
  • low fat and non-fat regular and flavored milk, and nutritionally equivalent (per USDA) milk alternatives, with no more than 150 calories per 8 ounces (12 oz. size or less);
  •  100% juice (or 100% juice plus water) with no added sweeteners, at least 10% of the recommended Daily Value (DV) for at least 3 vitamins and minerals, and no more than 120 calories per 8 oz. (12 oz. size or less);
  •  No or low-calorie beverages with no more than 10 calories per 8 ounces (any size);
  •  Light juices, sports drinks and other beverages with no more than 66 calories per 8 ounces (12 oz. size or less)

In summary, “at least 50% of beverages must be water and no or low calorie options.”

However, the standard that applies to the café, which is open before school, is from “Smart Snacks In School” Nutrition Standards Interim Final Rule Questions and Answers.  That states, “The standards do not apply to any foods brought to school in bagged lunches, or for birthday parties and special events, including after-school bake sales and fundraisers.”
