Byrnes Freshman Academy Powder Puff Football Game is Coming Soon

March 20, 2014

Byrnes Freshman Academy is having a Powder Puff flag football game that takes place at the BFA football field on March 31, at 5:00 PM.

The powder puff game is a football game where girls play and boys cheer.  It costs $10 for a jersey, which is what the teams wear to participate in the game.

There are various reasons why this game takes place, but the main one is to raise money to fight cancer for Relay for Life.

Some students join for other reasons. Maribeth Gambrell, a student at BFA and Powder Puff team member, said, “[I joined] probably because all of my friends are doing it, and I heard it was lots of fun.”

The first Powder Puff game was in 1931 at the Western State College of Colorado, which is now known as the Western State Colorado University.

There are four teams that are going against each other.  Teams One and Two practice together while Teams Three and Four practice together.

Teams One and Two practice dates are: March 10, March 17, and March 24. Teams Three and Four practice dates are: March 11, March 18, and March 25. Both teams practice times on these dates are 3:30 to 4:30 PM.

Maribeth commented further, “I haven’t practiced yet, but I think the funniest thing will be getting to play football while the boys cheer.”

On Wednesday, March 26, tickets go on sale to be purchased in advance for $2. On the game day, the tickets at the gate raise in price to $3.
