Sports can benefit student athletes
March 20, 2014James F Byrnes Freshman Academy
At BFA students and teachers talk about the benefits of sports.
Faculty member Mr. Tucker said, “Most people love sports because we were made to be active and competitive; sports are fun and suspenseful, nothing like watching or playing a good sport.”
Sasha Hart, a student at BFA, said, “I think it’s just entertainment. It’s an American pass time.” Sasha added, “I think it’s just to stay in shape, depends if it affects your grades.
Coach Guerra, a teacher at BFA, said, “Sports are a great physical activity. People just love it because of competition and to stay in shape.” Coach Guerra also stated, “It can affect schoolwork positively and negatively.” Guerra explained that the effect depends on how the students manage their time.
Mr. Tucker commented, “Sports can serve as a motivator; however, if a student puts too much time, energy, and effort in sports, that can adversely affect their academics.” Mr. Tucker also said, “Schools do not put more money into sports than education, even though it seems like it.”
Sports play a primarily positive role in youth development, including improved academic achievement, higher self-esteem, and fewer behavior problems in or out of school. The discipline of training, learning teamwork, and following leadership provides lifelong skills for athletes.
