First Round of the NFL Draft
April 27, 2012By Clay Blackwood of James F Byrnes Freshman Academy
On Tuesday, April 26, 2012, the 2012 NFL draft took place on ESPN.
The NFL Draft is when each team gets to pick rookies to be on their team for the next season.
To decide which team gets to pick first, the team with the worst record gets the first pick, all the way up to the number one team, getting the last pick.
The Indianapolis Colts got the first pick. They picked Andrew Luck, the quarterback from Stanford.
Misael Martinez, a students at Byrnes Freshman Academy, said, “I think Indianapolis is a good place for Andrew Luck to go because he is a passing quarterback, and their line does a good job at blocking for their quarterbacks.”
The Washington Redskins got the second pick; they picked Robert Griffin III, the Baylor quarterback, and Heisman trophy winner.
Lemaja Glenn, a student at Byrnes Freshman Academy, said, “The draft was predictable, because everyone knew that RG III (Robert Griffin III) was going to go to the Redskins.”
The University of South Carolina’s Stephon Gilmore, a Defensive Back, was the tenth pick for the Buffalo Bills.
Melvin Ingram, a Defensive End and previous South Carolina player was the eighteenth pick for the San Diego Chargers.
Sterling Mathis, said, “I think Gilmore and Ingram have a lot to live up to because they are the only two in the first round from South Carolina, and a lot of people will be looking up to them.”
“I think it’s awesome that two players from The University of South Carolina went in the first round. It really shows how much improvement the team has made as a whole,” said, Ridge Welch, a student at BFA.
The 2nd and 3rd Rounds will take place Friday night at seven o’clock on ESPN. The 4th-7th Rounds will be on Saturday, starting at Noon on ESPN.
