Bergen Triumphs Over Sussex In Doubleheader!

Paramus, NJ- Bergen (6-2) defeated Sussex CC (3-13) by the scores of  4-3 and 7-6.  Both games came down to the wire and could have gone either way.  The Bulldog's defense and pitching kept the Skylanders from coming back.

First Game- Bergen 4-Sussex 3

Bergen struggled on defense early and gave up several unearned runs to give the Skylanders an early lead.  The Bulldog's bats came alive late and cameback from a two runs down.  Sophomore shortstop, Marissa Varon (Bogota) had gone 2-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored.  Freshman, Ashley Figeroa (Hackensack), also contributed going 2-3 with one RBI.  Sophomore centerfielder, Sarah Stofan (Bogota) drove in a big run late in the game and had gone 1-3 with a stolen base and an RBI.  Sophomore starting pitcher, Lauren Hozak (Carlstadt), kept the Bergen in the game by pitching five innings and  allowing only two earned runs.  Sophomore pitcher, Allison Speranza (Hawthorne),pitched two solid innings to earn the win for Bergen.

Second Game- Bergen 7-Sussex 6

Bergen and Sussex were tied 2-2 late in the game.  Bergen's bats scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull ahead.  Sussex came back in the final inning making it 7-6 and loading the bases with two outs.  A great play at the end sealed it for the Bulldogs.  There was a hard hit ball up the middle that was snagged by Sophomore second baseman, Sara Ramirez (Bergenfield).  Ramirez turned in the clutch and threw to first for the final play of the game.

Allison Sperenza began and finished the second game. Sperenza won both games of the double header.  She pitched a total of nine innings on the day and allowing only four earned runs.  Sarah Stofan was on fire as she had gone 2-4 and scored three runs.  Sarah on the day was 3-7 with four runs scored.  Catcher, Kara Woegens (Bogota), had gone 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  On the day, Kara caught both games and batted 3-7 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Marissa Varon continued getting clutch hits by going 1-3 with a double.  Varon on the day was 3-6 with three RBI, Three doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base.  Ashley Figueroa had gone 2-4 with two RBI, but she also had a big day.  Figueroa had gone 4-7 with three RBI on the day.

Bergen's softball team will now travel to Lehigh Carbon CC (2-12) on Sunday, April 13th beginning at 12pm.
