Marian Catholic was able to hang on for a 14-13 win Friday night at Benedictine University in Lisle.
Marian is 2-1 overall, 1-0 after the first week of East Suburban Catholic Conference play.
"I love being 2-1 right now," Marian coach Dave Mattio said. "I've been around long enough to know that we could easily be 0-3 or 3-0 ... but the kids are young and learning and we just hope things continue."
Benet, which started the season 2-0 for the first time since the 1997 season, dropped to 2-1, 0-1.
Neither the Redwings nor the Spartans scored in the second half.
Marian's Trevor Woolfolk's long run set the stage for his eventual 1-yard touchdown for the first score of the game with 3:04 left in the first quarter. The Spartans scored again before the period expired when a Benet punt was blocked, and Cal Roque picked the ball up around the 15-yard line for an easy touchdown with 1:28 remaining. Both extra-point kicks from Jabari Danzy were successful.
Benet's first touchdown came via a nice set of plays to start the second quarter. Quarterback Nick Mankowski finally muscled his way in for a 1-yard TD run at 8:30.
The Redwings scored again with 2:54 left in the half on Pat Gillespie's 25-yard run through traffic to make it a 14-13 game.
