Eight days remain until Wheeler and Boone Grove kick off the 2011 season with the Back 2 School Challenge, and Bearcats athletic director Randy Stelter's checklist is nearing completion.

"I'm excited," Stelter said. "(Boone A.D.) Doug (Knutson) is doing a great job on his end. We just want to try to make it fun for both communities."

Festivities will begin with a dinner for the teams on Wednesday. A talent show is scheduled for Thursday at Boone. Each school has had several acts entered.

On Saturday, the JV contest kicks off a full game-day slate at noon. A wide variety of activities will be held on the Wheeler campus beginning at 2 p.m., including an open swim, a rock climbing wall, an obstacle course and a bean bag tournament. The communities' respective fire departments will have a water ball contest at 5:30 with a pregame tailgate going on from 5 to 7.

Former Notre Dame star Allen Pinkett and Tom Nowatzke, who scored the tying touchdown in the Baltimore Colts' Super Bowl V victory over the Dallas Cowboys, will conduct the coin toss.

Stelter has confirmed that Becca Bruszewski's basketball jersey will be retired during halftime ceremonies. The Wheeler and Notre Dame product will be heading overseas soon to play professionally in Finland. Also at the intermission, Wheeler will recognize players and coaches from its first team (2000).

The game will be punctuated by a fireworks display.
