HAMMOND | Wheeler exorcised the demon Saturday night.
With a losing streak that was as long as coach mark Bruner's tenure, the Bearcats finally hung a loss on arch-rival Hanover Central. They picked the perfect moment, beating the Wildcats 42-34 to win the Class 2A Bishop Noll sectional.
It was Hanover's last 2A game before they move up to 3A next season.
"Finally," Bruner said after the game. "We finally got them.'"
The Bearcats were led by freshman Nickole Finch, who scored a game-high 21 points.
"I was nervous all game," Finch said. "I just wanted to give my team the best I had."
Her best was plenty.
Finch gave the Bearcats an early lead when she buried a pair of 3-pointers in the first two minutes. Baskets by Tijana Raketic and Allison Urycki gave Wheeler a 10-0 lead.
After a timeout, Hanover got a pair of treys from Blayr Poston and Rylie Singleton to cut the lead to 12-7.
Wheeler (12-8) extended the lead to 19-9 midway through the second quarter on a pair of jumpers from Finch. At that point, it looked like the Bearcats might run away with the game.
