Bethesda Lady Patriots Win Invitational Championship
November 20, 2011By Shane Lightfoot of Bethesda Christian High School
The Bethesda Lady Patriots held on to win the championship game of the Bethesda Christian Varsity Girls Basketball Invitational last night 46-45 in an exciting final against Suburban Christian School.
Both teams had to overcome double digit deficits during the game. Strong team defense on Suburban's standout Senior Center Stephanie Barmes by Junior Carly Baker, Sophomore Mekayla Leichty and others, and a 3rd quarter scoring run led by Junior Cassie Mitchell, Seniors Hannah Ringler and Bree Trapp and Sophomore Lizzie Busch gave the Lady Patriots their biggest lead of the game, but the Crusaders mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback.
With the game tied and Suburban looking to take the lead, a steal and a layup by BCS Junior Guard Kendra Okey put the Lady Patriots ahead with under 20 seconds to play. After a free throw by Barmes and a turnover by Bethesda, the Lady Patriots clung to a 1-point lead. In possesion of the ball with 8 seconds remaining, Bethesda attempted to run out the clock, but a turnover with 3 seconds on the clock gave the Crusaders life and a final opportunity for the win. Suburban's Barmes took a final shot to win the game, but the attempt went just long, leaving the Lady Patriots victorious.
The Lady Patriots face the Crusaders again in what now figures to be a hotly contested rematch on December 13, at Suburban Christian. Next up, the Lady Patriots will travel to International to take on the Gryphons on Monday, 11/21, for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Congratulations to the Lady Patriots and their coaches for a great tournament!
