Bethesda Honors Spring Sports Athletes

June 3, 2011
By Shane Lightfoot of Bethesda Christian High School

Bethesda Christian School held its 2011 Spring Sports Awards Program on Thursday night to honor the student-athletes and coaches of the Varsity Softball and Baseball teams.

At the forefront was a strong group of graduating seniors that have helped shape and define Bethesda's Softball and Baseball programs over the last 4 years.  Softball seniors include Holly Johnson, Sally Schrock and Bree McNair.  For the Baseball team, Tyler Sims, Drew Bennett, Nick Beard, Levi Marshall and Shawn Sargent represented the senior class.

In addition to all team members being awarded Varsity letters and recognition during the program, Special Awards were given to the following athletes:

Softball -

Offensive Player of the Year - Senior Holly Johnson
Defensive Player of the Year - Junior Olivia Harrison
Hustle Award - Sophomore Kendra Okey
Coach's Award - Senior Bree McNair

Baseball -

Offensive Player of the Year - Senior Drew Bennett
Defensive Player of the Year - Senior Tyler Sims
Pitcher of the Year - Senior Tyler Sims
Hustle Award - Senior Shawn Sargent
Coach's Award - Senior Nick Beard

The Lady Patriots finished the season as the Sectional Runner-up with a 14-12 overall record.  As they look toward moving into a new sectional next year, there is plenty of room for optimism with the team that is returning.

The Sectional Champion Patriots continue with Regional play on Saturday, June 4, against Edinburgh at 1 p.m. at Shakamak High School in Jasonville, IN.  A win in that game would advance them to the Regional Final at 8 p.m. against either Rising Sun or North Central (Farmersburg).

If you are looking for something to do on Saturday  - travel to Shakamak and support the Patriots as they continue their march deeper into the state tournament.   Your presence can make a difference!
