Panthers take Back-to-Back District Championships
March 4, 2014Augusta Independent Schools
For the second straight year, for the Augusta Panthers to make it to the 10th region tournament they'd have to get past the Mason County Royals. Once again the Royals would have a height advantage and they'd use that early to take a 13-6 1st quarter lead. They extended their lead out to 24-14 in the
2nd quarter and looked to be putting this one away early. But Augusta wasn't done as they made a furious 9-0 run to close the quarter with the final 3 points coming from a deep "3" at the buzzer from Brent Bach to make the halftime score 24-23, Mason County. Things were all square after 3 quarters at 38 apiece. And with some more late heroics from Bach the two teams would need overtime to decide this one. In the extra period it was all about Bach for the Panthers. He scored all 12 of Augusta's points including a free throw with 00.8 on the clock that made the final score, 61-60. Augusta advanced to the championship game with a record of 18-11. Brent Bach led all scorers with a career high 48 points.
lf as Bracken County did it's best to slow down the Panthers offense. Augusta held a 21-18 lead at the break. In the 3rd quarter the Polar Bears saw their plan to keep Brent Bach in check continue to work but Connor Maddox, not so much. Maddox, who hit two 3's in the first half, hit 3 more in the 3rd quarter t
o help the Panthers lead, 43-34 after 3 quarters. In the 4th quarter he'd hit 3 more for a total of 8 to lead the Panthers to their 2nd straight 39th district title, 71-60. Augusta would now enter the 10th region tournament with a 19-11 record. Connor Maddox led the Panthers with a career high 26 points. Brent Bach added 21 and Camryn Snapp had 13. Next up for the Panthers, the Robertson County Black Devils, in the 1st round of the 10th region tournament held at Mason County. Gametime is 7:30pm on Friday night, March 7th.
