Republic Bank Classic Wrap-Up

Starting on Dec. 27th the Augusta Panthers participated in the Republic Bank Classic held at Lexington Catholic High School. This tournament is regarded by many to be the most prestigious holiday event in the state. The Panthers first opponent would be the Lafayette Generals. The 1st quarter was a tight one as Augusta battled the highly ranked Generals trailing 17-14 going into the 2nd quarter but the Panthers would get no closer as Lafayette outscored Augusta 35-8 to lead 52-22 at the break and went on to win, 86-46. Augusta dropped to 8-3 with the loss. Brent Bach led all scorers with 15 points.
The next day Augusta faced the Hazard Bulldogs Once again the Panthers played a competitive 1st quarter as Hazard led, 19-13. Once again, Augusta's opponent would start pulling away in the 2nd quarter and not look back. The Bulldogs dominated the paint scoring 60 points at close range. The final score was 95-72 Augusta lost their 4th straight game to fall to 8-4. Brent Bach led all scorers with 36 points. Camryn Snapp had 10.
Augusta continued on in the tournament facing the Clinton County Bulldogs. This game would feature a close 1st quarter as the two squads were knotted at 15 apiece. In the 2nd quarter the Panthers outscored the Bulldogs by 1 to lead 34-33. The close affair continued on through the 3rd as Augusta led 54-50 going into the 4th quarter as the Panthers pulled away getting help from hitting 15 free throws to win, 75-64. The win snapped a four game losing streak and improved Augusta to 9-4. Brent Bach led all scorers with 33 points. Also in double figures were Camryn Snapp with 18 and Connor Maddox with 12.
On the final day of the tournament, thanks to Sunday's win, Augusta would face the Blue Devils of Henry Clay. The Blue Devils used a furious full court press to jump out on the Panthers 20-8 in the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter the Panthers put a few more points on the board but the taller and quicker Blue Devils were hard to stop. Henry Clay led at the half, 43-21. Augusta would make it interesting a couple times in the second half but each rally was stopped as the Blue Devils won comfortably, 82-58. Augusta fell to 9-5. Brent Bach led all scorers with 26 points. Connor Maddox dropped in 15.
