The Region 5 Class A Cross Country Championship was held at Lykins Park in Winchester Kentucky this past Saturday. Coming off a season where the Panthers sent two runners to the state championship, they were looking to once again have runners qualify to represent the team in Lexington.
Augusta ran the course at Lykins Park in their final meet of the season in the Run for the Water Barrel contest. “I think if possible, it’s always beneficial to run a course where the big meets are held like region and state,” Coach Tim Litteral said. “We didn’t initially have any regular season meets scheduled at Clark County, but once we found out the region was being moved there, I wanted to get my runners on there. It helps them know what to expect.”
The Panthers were led by sophomore Camryn Snapp. Fresh off a 3rd place finish at Lykins Park last week, Snapp placed 4th at the Regional Championship, running an identical time of 18:15. “Camryn started out in fifth place and was finally able to get past the Danville kid,” Litteral recounted. From there, he settled into fourth, extending the lead a little at a time, ultimately finishing 11 seconds ahead of the fifth place finisher.
Four other runners took to the course for Augusta. Eighth grader David Reed was next in for the Panthers, finishing 44th out of the 67 runners in the Class A race. He set a personal record by running 21:58, 50 seconds off his time from the previous week. Nick Zeidler finished 46th, running 22:01, also 50 seconds quicker than his previous meet. Nathan Shrader finished 55th, holding his time steady at 22:45. Thomas Mains came in 60th with a time of 23:24.
For the second straight year, Snapp will represent Augusta in the State Cross Country Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park this Saturday, November 09. The top five runners who are not on a team that qualifies for state have the opportunity to advance, and Snapp was the first at-large bid awarded. His top ten finish also named him to the All-Region Team for Class A Region 5.
