Home » Boys' Basketball NewsFreshmen Panthers Claim 39th District ChampionshipFebruary 11, 2013 Augusta Independent SchoolsThe Augusta freshmen team started off a busy week on Monday night at home facing Bracken County in the 39th district tournament semifinal. Bracken County opened the game with an extended 3-2 zone that gave the Panthers fits as they struggled to score. The Polar Bears weren't exactly on fire themselves but they held an 8-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. Augusta spent the 2nd quarter still trying to figure out the zone and they started doing a better job of it but the Panthers couldn't stop Austin Crawford who scored 11 first half points leading Bracken County to a 21-16 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter Augusta started to take control outscoring the Polar Bears 14-6 to take a 30-27 lead into the final 6 minutes. In the final quarter Augusta would hold off Bracken County to improve to 7-0 and advance to the district final. Connor Maddox led the Panthers with 15 points, Camryn Snapp added 10. On Thursday night the Panthers were at home again matched up with the Mason County Royals for the 39th district freshmen final. The Panthers got off to a quick start leading 15-11 after 1 quarter. In the 2nd quarter the Royals outscored the Panthers 12-8 mostly due to second chance points as they dominated the boards and the two teams went to the break tied at 23 apiece. In the 3rd quarter Mason County's hard work in the paint continued to pay off as they edged out in front at the end of the quarter, despite foul trouble, 31-30. In the 4th quarter got some big free throws late to pull away and for the first time since the 2000-01 season, became 39th district freshmen champions. The win improved them to 8-0. Connor Maddox led Augusta with 17 points, Camryn Snapp added 16 and Owens Crawford chipped in with 10. Scoring vs. Mason County: Maddox 17, Snapp 16, Crawford 10, Staggs 4, Sibcy 2
