The Augusta Panthers were back in action on Saturday night in Berea playing in the championship game of the Bluegrass Conference Tournament against the Richmond Model Patriots. Model won the 12th Region Class A Tournament and were eliminated in the quarterfinal round on Friday. That made this game possible. Augusta didn't waste any time jumping on the Patriots bolting out to an 11-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game. The Panthers kept their foot on the gas and lead 26-12 after 1 quarter. Early in the 2nd quarter Tanner Kelsch would pick up his 2nd foul and sit until halftime. Taking advantage of Augusta losing their defensive leader, the Patriots would get back in this one. Model would go on a 12-4 run to creep back into the game only to see the Panthers push the margin back out. A 3-pointer just before the buzzer by Model made the Panther lead 48-42 at the half. In the 3rd quarter Model would outscore Augusta again (23-17) and get to within 1 point on 2 different occasions but every time Augusta needed a big shot or a turnover they would get it to stay in front. Model never threatened in the 4th quarter as the Panthers poured it on winning the game 98-75. Augusta improved to 16-7. Brent Bach led all scorers with 36 points. Tanner Kelsch added 25 and the freshman duo of Camryn Snapp and Connor Maddox dropped in 14 and 11 respectively.
"That's a big win against a nice ball team," said Coach Hinson, "It's good to have momentum going into next week."
Scoring vs. Model: Bach 36, Kelsch 25, Snapp 14, Maddox 11, Barrett 7, Crawford 2, Conn 2, Archibald 1
