Augusta took to the road once again on Wednesday following their runner-up finish in the Class A Tournament. The Panthers would face the Newport Wildcats who were also a runner-up in the Class A. In the 1st quarter it was an up and down affair as the two squads raced up and down the floor. Newport was making a habit of scoring in the paint while Augusta hit from inside and out including a 3 just before the buzzer by Camryn Snapp to give Augusta a 20-19 lead. In the 2nd quarter Newport's size started to work in their favor as they continued to pound the ball inside to build a lead that reached double figures but was trimmed to 45-37 at the break. In the 3rd quarter Augusta made their best push to take control of the game scoring 33 points but Newport continued to exploit the paint hitting numerous high percentage shots to keep hold of the lead going into the 4th, 70-66. In the 4th quarter it was all about maintaining the lead for the Wildcats. They did just that as Augusta just couldn't get over the hump and they fell, 92-79. The loss dropped Augusta to 14-7. Brent Bach led all scorers with 32 points. Joining Brent in double figures were Tanner Kelsch with 19 and Camryn Snapp with 11.
"Newport is quick and big and they used those strengths to their advantage tonight," said Coach Hinson, "We've got to step up and play better defense, especially in the paint."
