Panther's All "A" Runner-Up Recap

January 21, 2013
Augusta Independent Schools

On Thursday night the Augusta Panthers faced the Paris Greyhounds in the quarterfinal round of the 10th Region Class A Tournament.  The Panthers had defeated the Greyhounds back in December. Augusta jumped out early in this one leading 22-11 after 1 quarter.  In the 2nd quarter the Panthers kept their pace.  Paris would get the lead under double digits on a couple occasions but Augusta continued to maintain to the half leading, 39-28.  The Panthers would continue to play well and increase their lead in the second half as Paris never seriously threatened and Augusta won going away, 81-63. Augusta improved to 13-5 with the victory.  Brent Bach led all scorers with 36 points.  Joining him in double figures were Tanner Kelsch and Camryn Snapp with 12 apiece and Dustin Freeman had 10.

Scoring vs. Paris:  Bach 36, Kelsch 12, Snapp 12, Freeman 10, Maddox 4, Crawford 4, Barrett 2, Grey 1

On Friday night Augusta renewed their rivalry with cross county foe Bracken County in the Class A semifinals.  Just like Paris, Augusta already owned a victory over the Polar Bears earlier in the season but that didn't mean much in the tournament atmosphere.  The 1st quarter was a tight one as the two squads went back and forth and ended up tied at 13 apiece. Augusta started to take control in the 2nd quarter but Bracken County wasn't about to give up.  With each Panther run, the Polar Bears had a response as they kept the game close. At the half Augusta led, 33-29.  In the 3rd quarter it was much of the same.  The Panthers would make a run and get a sizable lead only to see the Polar Bears come back but there was one problem for Bracken County, they could get close but just could not take the lead.  Augusta held strong with each Polar Bear run and started to pull away in the 4th quarter to advance to Saturday night's championship game vs. Bishop Brossart, 67-56.  The win made the Panthers 14-5 on the year.  Brent Bach led all scorers with 26 points.  Tanner Kelsch joined Bach in double figures with 20.       "We knew this would be a tough game, an emotional game," said Coach Hinson, "And I counted on the team to do what we needed to do to win this game and that's exactly what we did."

Scoring vs. Bracken County:  Bach 26, Kelsch 20, Snapp 7, Freeman 6, Maddox 5, Crawford 3

On Saturday night there were only two teams left standing in the 10th Region Class A Tournament: Augusta and Bishop Brossart.  The Panthers were making their 2nd appearance in the Class A final('03).  The 1st quarter didn't see a lot of scoring but it did see the Panthers take early control jumping out in front 12-7 only to see the Mustangs close out the quarter on a 4-0 run as Augusta led 12-11. In the 2nd quarter, foul trouble forced Brossart to go their bench early and often.  Augusta meanwhile just kept hanging around and were about to go to the half tied when Brossart's Justin Saunders snuck in a basket just before the buzzer to make it a 25-23 Mustang lead at the break.  In the 3rd quarter things started to change.  Brossart started to heat up and took advantage of some Augusta turnovers to break the game open.  At the end of the quarter Augusta found themselves down, 55-41.  The Mustangs scored the first 2 points of the final quarter to go up by their largest lead, 57-41.  But Augusta, known for never giving up, would take the long road back into the game on the strength of a 19-7 run to be down only 64-60 with only 3 minutes to go.  But unfortunately that would be the closest the Panthers would get the rest of the way as they fell to Brossart, 78-68.  The loss dropped Augusta to 14-6.  Brent Bach, led all scorers with 39 points, 23 of those in the 4th quarter.  He was joined in double figures by Tanner Kelsch with 12 points.

"We fought and battled with a team ranked in the state, we gave it all we had," said Coach Hinson, "And I'm very proud of them.  They're heartbroken right now but we'll bounce back.

Scoring vs. Brossart:  Bach 39, Kelsch 12, Crawford 7, Freeman 6, Maddox 2, Snapp 2
