Panthers Fall to Harrison
January 14, 2013Augusta Independent Schools
In their only game this week the Augusta Panthers traveled to Cynthiana to face the Harrison County Thorobreds. The Panthers started off slowly in the 1st while the Thorobreds were quite comfortable on their home floor jumping out to an 11-4 lead. But Augusta, as they have done many times, battled back to close the gap and were down 17-14 after 1. In the 2nd quarter the Panthers carried that momentum with them and got into a groove as Connor Maddox came off the bench and hit a trio of 3-pointers to put Augusta in front. They would take the lead to the break, 32-27. In the 3rd quarter though the Thorobreds would storm back to regain the lead as the two squads battled back and forth. A Trenton Barrett layup at the buzzer would put Augusta in front after 3 quarters 43-42.
In the 4th quarter Harrison County would start to wear down the Panthers and go back out in front by double digits but their smooth sailing would be interrupted by the Panthers who were not finshed. Missed free throws and full court pressure would bring the Panthers back including a steal and basket by Camryn Snapp that pulled Augusta within two with less than a minute to play. The Panthers missed a 3-pointer that could have tied the game with only seconds remaining and the Thorobreds hit enough free throws to pull out the 64-59 win. The loss dropped Augusta to 12-5 on the season. Brent Bach led all scorers with 19 points. Also in double figures were Tanner Kelsch with 14, Connor Maddox with 12 and Camryn Snapp with 10. The Panthers are back in action on Thursday night vs. Paris in the 1st round of the Class A Tournament at Nicholas County.
"I told the boys I'm proud of them for coming back. We didn't get all the way there but we fought hard," said Coach Hinson, "Now we've got to get ready for the Class A."
Scoring vs. Harrison County: Bach 19, Kelsch 14, Maddox 12, Snapp 10, Crawford 2, Barrett 2
