Unranked Atlanta Aliens Upsets #20 Ranked Phoenix City Bombers

Phoenix City, AL: The Thanksgiving  Holiday weekend brought families and friend together  to celebrate their times of thanks. The timing was also perfect for the unranked Atlanta Aliens ABA professional basketball team to give thanks after upsetting the #20 ranked Phoenix City Bombers 134-123 during the holiday weekend while in Phoenix City, Alabama. Beating a top ranked team in nothing new for GM/Head Coach Duck Richards, last season Richards led his expansion team to defeat the #1 team in the ABA Jacksonville Giants, the 2011-2012 ABA Champions.

This was not an easy road trip for the Aliens. Coach Duck Richards gave his team off to spend time with their families during the holidays and the team had minimal time for practice. Yet, the old coach trusted his instinct to allow players to relax during the holiday. As the team regrouped the day prior to the game, Coach Duck Richards was faced with some concern. His leading scorer from game one, Mike Sloan had flu-like symptom and was very weak. Former NBADL player Marquis Gilstrap was nursing a sore knee and was not 100%. All players did not arrive for the scheduled departure time. Yet, the game must be played.

Immediately after tip-off, the lack of practice and time off reflected on the court. The Aliens played very sluggish with no energy and gave up several unforced turnovers. They did not play with the same intensity as they played in the first game but managed to take a 43-27 lead at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, things got worse in the second quarter for the Aliens as the Bombers picked up momentum and tied the score 58-58 midway into the quarter.  Coach Duck called on his infamous bench squad he refer to as the “Goons” to settle things down and they did that by taking a 73-63 lead into halftime.

After a brief discussion during halftime, the Aliens started out with a little more aggression. In fact they showed too much aggression by putting the Bombers in the bonus early in the third quarter and the Bombers took a 102-98 lead going into the forth quarter. That’s when the Coach Duck Richards called upon his veterans to take control of this game and they answered. The inside play of Rashad Faust was too much for the Bombers to handle as he collected 20 of the 36 points in the forth quarter alone.  Eventually, that was the difference of the game. According to Coach Duck Richards, “We were not consistent with our defensive pressure and the Bombers played with much harder than we did.” The Bombers forced the Aliens to commit thirty-two turnovers in the game and the Aliens only shot 42% from the free throw line. “We played a very bad game all around as a whole and we are very fortunate to leave Alabama with the victory,” said Richards.

Faust lead all scorers with 27 points and 8 rebounds, Mike Sloan and Alonso Davis finished with 15 each, Jay Brown 13, Sidney Harris 12, Marquis Gilstrap 11, Joshua Jones, Samuel Goodman and David Lawrence each had 10, Demetrice Williams and Steve Cunningham both had 5 and Joshua Brewster had 3. Joshua Jones led the team with 11 rebounds. The Atlanta Aliens is now 2-0 and they are scheduled to play the Gainesville Heat in Gainesville, Georgia on December 1, 2012.
