Another Satisfied Shepard Parent!
March 29, 2014Alan B. Shepard High School
Over the Summer of 2013, my son had the opportunity to interview Governor Pat Quinn. He was the only high school student to obtain this interview and it was all thanks to Mr. Rice. Also over the Summer, my son - along with two other Shepard High School students - got the opportunity to go to the Chicago Bears Camp in Bourbonnais, Ill., and film the practice. Mr. Rice also arranged for my son to interview three Chicago Bears rookie players. My son was given a compliment by one of the players, Khaseem Greene, that he conducted the interview as well any professional, and was shocked to hear that my son was only in high school! Mr. Rice is the one that taught my son how to conduct an interview during his TV Production class the preceding year.
My son also does commentary/announcing for several live webcast events, such as football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, wrestling, graduation and others.
Because of Mr. Rice’s many years of experience as a cameraman in television, he has given my son the opportunity to learn how to think on his feet when things go wrong and to keep up with the fast pace of filming live.
My son applied and was accepted to Columbia College in Chicago. He is pursuing a degree in film studies. Through the various opportunities Mr. Rice has provided for my son since 2012, he has a wonderful portfolio that few of his future classmates at Columbia have.
I am so thankful that Mr. Rice has given my son so many experiences and opportunities that no other student in this area has. This will give him a great advantage at college inside and outside of the classroom.
My son is not the only student who has been given these wonderful opportunities. The valuable years of experience Mr. Rice has had translate into life lessons that my son and many others will have for the rest of their lives. Also, all the experiences that Mr. Rice brings to his students are invaluable to learn from him. No other student in District 218 is doing or learning the things that Mr. Rice is teaching his students - whether they are exclusive Bears interviews or one-on-one interviews with prominent politicians. I hope that Mr. Rice will continue to have the opportunity to give others what he has given my son.
