JEFFERSON POST By: Michael Graybeal / Sports Editor Date: May 8, 2009
The Huskies golf team reached a milestone this year that has been sought after for a long time in Ashe County, sending a team to the NCHSAA Western Regionals Tournament. This season, the Huskies achieved this milestone after an impressive Mountain Valley Season that landed them the third spot in the MVAC, receiving a bid to the Western Regionals as a team.
By receiving a bid as a team, any of the Huskies' six competitors at the Regionals Tournament could qualify for the State Tournament. The Huskies came in fifth at the Regionals tournament, with five of the six competitors scoring in double digits, with Tanner Goodman leading the way with a round of 76 on 18 holes. Trey Scott followed closely with a 77, which was good enough for the Husky pair to finish third and fourth in the tournament, receiving a bid to the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament. Scott was tied with Travis Smith from Mountain Heritage, as Smith qualified as an individual, and the round was extended to a sudden death playoff. Scott won the playoff to earn the fourth spot, and advanced to the State Tournament.
Kameron Buchanan of Smokey Mountain was the Medalist with a round of 72, and Spencer Jones of Shelby was the Runner-up with a 73. Goodman came in third, and Scott and Buchanan tied for fourth.
Other Husky scorers were Caleb Lyalls with a 93, Sean Turnmeire and Jordan Crouse with a 99, and Cam Vogler with a 111. The Huskies combined to finish fifth place with a team score of 345, finishing above Mitchell, North Surry, Pisgah, and CD Owens. West Henderson came in first as a team with a 322 total score, and Wilkes Central followed in second with a 324-team score.
The State Tournament will be held at Long Leaf Golf and Country Club this upcoming Monday and Tuesday.
On Monday, Goodman and Scott will both tee off at 8:10 a.m. for their first rounds, with Goodman teeing off on hole one, opening the round with the front nine holes. Scott will tee off at 8:10, starting on the back nine holes. |
