Ashe Wrestling Results

The Huskies wrestling program has opened ts 2008-09 campaign building an impressive 3-3 record after the first six matches of the season. Ashe opened up the season at home on Friday, December 5 when they hosted the Avery Vikings. Ashe came away with a 48-28 team victory, and nine individual victories.

The day after the Avery match, Ashe hosted the Ashe Invitational Dual Team Tournament, in which Ashe went 2-3 with wins over North Stokes and Holston, VA. Ashe defeated North Stokes in their third match of the day with a 66-12 final score, and defeated Holston to end the day with a 48-27 victory. In the first two matches, Ashe lost to Galax, VA 35-44, and a close match with Statesville with a final 39-38 score. Ashe's third loss came from West Caldwell with another close match, 39-24.

In the season opening match against Avery, Ashe had seven wrestlers to win by pinning their opponent. Logan Orr pinned Brock Yackey in the 125 weight class in time 1:07, Jacob Cardwell pinned Tyler Long in the 130 weight class in time 1:46, Jacob Gentry pinned Bryan Moody in the 140 weight class in time 1:22, Dalton Lewis pinned Trent Mitchell in the 160 weight class in time 1:08, Robert Seatz pinned Leo Munoz in the 171 weight class in time :28, Joshua Wineberg pinned Nathaniel Buchanan in the 215 weight class in time :38, and Zachery Caffey pinned Justin Crowder in the 285 weight class in time :58.

Two Huskies recorded victories by decision in the win for Ashe. Aaron Scott defeated Anthoney Varacalli in the 145 weight class with an 8-2 score final, earning Ashe three team points, and Antonio Barrientos defeated Jose Munoz by decision in the 152 weight class with a final score of 4-3, also giving Ashe three points.

Ashe's next victory came in third match of the Tournament when they faced North Stokes High School. Ashe claimed the 66-12 team victory with individual wins by Robert Blevins, Kegan Blevins, Antonio Barrientos, Dalton Lewis, Sherman Gilbert, Joshua Wineberg, and Zachery Caffey. Robert Blevins, Kegan Blevins, Barrientos, Gilbert, Wineberg, and Caffey each recorded pins, and Lewis won due to a default.

Ashe's third victory was over Holston High School, with a score of 48-27. The Huskies benefited from five forfeits, for 30 of the 48 points. Jacob Cardwell, Brittan Hooper, and Dalton Lewis earned the remaining 18 points with pins for Ashe. Lewis and Hooper both pinned their opponent in under one-minute, for a quick match.

In a close match for Ashe, in the 215 weight class, Joshua Wineberg loss by Decision with a minute difference of 4-3.

In the losses for Ashe, Aaron Scott recorded three victories, moving him to 6-0 on the season. Robert Seatz won two matches, one by pin, and Logan Orr won two matches, one by disqualification, and one by a Technical Fall, winning 16-1 against Darius King of Statesville High School. Orr is 5-5 on the season, and Zach Caffey is 4-5 with four pins, and one decision.

The Huskies returned to action Wednesday evening in the Grayson County Tri-Match, and then traveled to Mt. Tabor on Thursday evening. Results of the matches were unavailable at Press Time. Their next scheduled match is Monday, December 15 at Watauga High School for a non-conference match. MVAC action starts on Tuesday, December 30 at North Surry.
