Home » Baseball NewsAshe Baseball Picks Up First WinMarch 27, 2010 Ashe County HuskiesFor the first time this season, the varsity baseball team got to celebrate a win, defeating the North Wilkes Vikings in a thriller by 9-8 score. Seven of the Husky starters each added a hit, including three guys with multi-hit performances in seniors Aaron Scott, Greyson Wells, and Dalton Lewis. After the Huskies scored an early run in the first inning, the offense was able to plate two more in the top of the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Evan Gray smacked an RBI double, and catcher Zach Walter drove Gray in with an RBI single to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead. North Wilkes responded with a huge bottom half of the inning. After North Wilkes scored two runs to cut the deficit to one, Viking first baseman Evan Handy hammered a grand slam over the left field fence to give North Wilkes a 6-3 lead. The Huskies would not quit. Ashe scored two runs in the fifth, and four more in the sixth to grab the victory. Wells finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in 3 runs and scoring 2 runs of his own. Lewis also had a huge night at the dish, going 3-for-4 and driving in 4 runs. Evan Gray started the game and pitched 4 innings, gave up 6 runs with 3 of those earned, and put four batters away on strikes David Dalessandro got the win for the Huskies, pitching 3 innings in relief and giving up just 2 runs. As a team, Ashe scored 9 runs on 12 hits, and committed 3 errors. North Wilkes scored 8 runs on 8 hits, and committed 2 errors. The Huskies are scheduled to get back on the diamond next Tuesday for the first home game of the season. Ashe will be taking on the West Wilkes Blackhawks. The JV game will get things started at 4:30, with the varsity game to follow.
