Anna Wooten and Haley Maloney successfully defended their 2A Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Doubles Championship last week, winning the title for the second consecutive year.
This also continued an outstanding streak of successful tournament appearances for the Lady Husky tennis team. This marked the eighth consecutive season that a doubles team from Ashe County has claimed the 2A MVAC title.
“I am so proud of these ladies and what they have accomplished this year,” said head coach Larry Dix.
Wooten and Maloney finished the season with a perfect 20-0 record. The duo beat doubles teams from Forbush and Wilkes Central in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the championship round.
In the championship match, Wooten and Maloney had little trouble with Ashley Griffin and Heaven Walters of Starmount. The Ashe duo took the first set 6-0 then clinched the championship with a 6-3 win in the second set.
The two seniors will be competing this weekend in regional matches in the 2A state playoffs in Salisbury. This is the 10th straight year that Ashe has had at least one doubles team qualify for regional play in the state tournament.
Joining Wooten and Maloney in Salisbury will be another Ashe County doubles team. Maggie Witherspoon and Hallie Brown, who reached the semifinals of the MVAC tournament, qualified for the regionals as well.
NCHSAA Individual Regionals will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday. Winners will continue playing on Saturday.
