The 2011-2012 high school sports season came to a close last week with the final award ceremony of the year, honoring the best two athletes, coach, and the top Husky spring sports athletes.
Josh Wineberg and MacKenzie Domske were chosen as the 2011-2012 Ashe County High School Athletes of the Year.
Wineberg took home Defensive Player of the Year honors in football, and kept his sporting success rolling right into wrestling season where he took home the 2A State Championship in the 285-pound division. Wineberg will be playing football this season at Western Carolina after signing his National Letter of Intent back in February.
Domske was a three-sport star playing on the volleyball team, women’s soccer team and on the track team. Domske is the all-time leading scorer for women’s soccer at ACHS, and wrapped up her sports career by helping lead the soccer team to the second round of the 2A state playoffs and taking an eighth place finish at the state 2A track meet in the 100-meter hurdles.
ACHS Coach of the Year went to basketball coach Marc Payne. Payne guided the Huskies to an outstanding 25-4 record, the Mountain Valley Conference Championship, and also earned MVAC Coach of the Year honors for his success on the hardwood.
