In its opening match of the season, Ashe County High lost all nine slots against Forbush. Tuesday under brilliantly sunny skies, the Huskies reversed their fortunes with an 8-1 rout of the visiting Falcons in Mountain Valley Conference boys tennis.
“I was glad to get the win,” said Ashe head coach Larry Dix. “I think we played some good tennis.” Dix lamented the Falcons' lineup being without two players. But Ashe (4-5, 4-5 MVC) was strong nonetheless.
The Huskies didn't lose more than six games in any of their straight-set wins by Lucas Zeller, Will Church, Josh Meghoo and Alex Church in the third through sixth slots of singles. Top seed Zeb Richardson frustrated Tyler Reece in a 7-5, 6-2 triumph and Sam Bowers claimed his first singles win with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 victory over Blake Goins.
“He's struggled with consistency,” Dix said of Bowers. “Today he played with a lot more consistency. He played smart, and it was good for his confidence.”
Richardson and Bowers claimed an 8-4 win over Reece-Goins and the Church brothers zipped past Zeb Cochran-Luke Hinkle 8-1.
