A series of small mistakes that developed into runs is what cost Bardstown High School the game Monday at Nelson County, BHS Coach Cody Brown said.

"It\'s a hard pill to swallow when you lose any game," he said. "But at least we weren\'t beat athletically. It\'s those little mistakes that tend to develop into a run that bite us every time it seems."

Nelson County Coach Brent Childress said despite the 8 - 2 win, the game was still not the best showcase of the team\'s talent.

"I\'m sure we haven\'t played our best baseball yet," he said. "It\'s coming and I think we\'re really getting primed for the district tournament."

With Monday\'s win, Nelson County is 11 - 12 for the season. A match-up against Bethlehem Tuesday night had not yet been played by press time. Childress said a win against Bethlehem would guarantee a No. 1 seed in the tourney. A Bethlehem win would create a scenario in which Childress said it\'s unclear how the bracket might appear.

"It would be a virtual log jam," he said.

Childress credited Monday\'s win to the play of pitchers Devin Parker, Eric Thompson and Adam Gillis; and Derek Shouse, who got three base hits.

Brown said Steven Pis, who pitched the entire game for Bardstown, is a natural on the mound who "comes from a family of great pitchers."

A Tuesday game for Bardstown at home against Washington County hadn\'t been played as of press time. Bardstown is at Bethlehem Friday night.
