NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Elon University junior wide receiver Terrell Hudgins (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount HS) and senior place kicker Andrew Wilcox (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) were named to the 2008 Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America team Friday afternoon, marking the first time the Phoenix ever landed two players on the unit in the same year.
The team was selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and certified by UHY Advisors, a New Haven-based accounting firm. Hudgins was one of only two repeat honorees. Former Elon linebacker and current Jacksonville Jaguar safety Chad Nkang - the only other Phoenix player ever elected to a Walter Camp team - earned the honor in 2005.
The 2008 squad consists of players from 13 different conferences and 20 institutions. The Southern Conference landed six players on the team, the most of any league. Elon was one of just five schools to boast more than one selection.
The 6-3, 237-pound Hudgins hauled in 86 receptions for 1,116 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008. He became the Elon and SoCon all-time career leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches this year. A two-time Walter Payton Award finalist, he finished 11th in the standings for the honor in 2007 and 15th in 2008. The Walter Payton Award is given annually to the FCS National Offensive Player of the Year by The Sports Network.
Hudgins has also been named a First Team All-Southern Conference wide receiver by the Southern Conference Sports Media Association each of the last three seasons. The league's coaches tabbed him a Second Team All-Southern Conference selection in 2006 and a First Team All-Southern Conference choice in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, Hudgins was tabbed a First Team All-American by The Associated Press, College Sporting News, CollegeSportsReport.com, The Sports Network and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. In 2006, he was dubbed a Second Team All-American by The Associated Press.
Hudgins is the all-time Elon and SoCon leader in receptions in a season (117 last year), receptions in a career (272), receiving yards in a career (3,617) and touchdown receptions in a career (36). He is the all-time Elon leader in receptions in a game (16 versus Liberty and at Furman last year), receiving yards in season (1,474 last year), touchdown receptions in a game (tied with four versus Liberty last year) and touchdown receptions in a season (18 last year).
Hudgins is also the all-time SoCon leader in games receiving for at least 100 yards in a season (tied with seven last year), consecutive games receiving for at least 100 yards in a season (five last year) and games receiving for at least 100 yards in a career (18). Last season, Hudgins and former teammate Michael Mayers set the NCAA single-season record for the most receptions by two teammates (207) as well as the SoCon single-season record for the most receiving yards by two teammates (2,538).
Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting All-America teams for the Football Bowl and Championship Subdivisions.
