November 17, 2008 By Dale Trent of Halifax Co High School
Eighteen Comets Players Named To All-District Team By Joe Chandler Sports Editor Eighteen members of the Halifax County High School varsity football team have been named to the 2008 All-Western Valley District Football Team. Four Comets players including kicker and punter Cameron Starke, wide receiver Lemal Adams, defensive end Michael Puryear and defensive back Peter Jennings were named to the First Team. Starke was a unanimous pick as place kicker and also earned a First Team slot as punter. Adams, who logged 45 catches for 461 yards and two touchdowns, averaged 10.24 yards per catch for the season as one of the corps of receivers the Comets utilized this season. Puryear and Jennings both had an outstanding season at their respective positions on defense and were leaders of the Comets' defensive efforts this season. Only those players that are named to the First Team are eligible for consideration in the voting for the All-Northwest Region Team. Halifax County had three players, senior quarterback Josh Hudson, senior wide receiver Andre Ervin and junior defensive tackle Dante Hamlett, named to the Second Team of the All-Western Valley District Team. Hudson threw for 1,321 yards and nine touchdowns while going 130-201-7 in passing through the Comets' 10-game slate. Ervin had 31 catches totaling 453 yards and six touchdowns on the season. Hamlett, a 6-2, 245-pound junior, had a solid season playing on the defensive line for the Comets this season. Several other Comets players received Honorable Mention kudos while being named to the All-Western Valley District Team. Offensive players receiving Honorable mention status included junior quarterback Dale Trent, senior running back Laquan Lynn, senior wide receiver Courtney Ervin, and senior kick returner Clyde Scott. Also named on offense were senior center Terrance Jennings, sophomore guard Quinton Polk, and senior tackle Josh Long. On the defensive side, senior linebacker Keith Tucker and junior linebacker Scott Rickman were named as were junior defensive backs Shaquan Bailey and Markee Brooks. Western Valley District champion William Fleming, which lost to Liberty-Bealeton Saturday in a first-round Northwest Region playoff game had five players named to the First Team on offense and landed six spots on defense on the first team. GW, which defeated Brook Point High School Friday night in a first-round Northwest Region playoff game, had two First Team picks. David Wilson, who became the first player in GW history to break the 2,000-yard single-season rushing mark, was named as the Offensive Player of the Year in the Western Valley District and was one of three running backs listed on the First Team of the all-district offensive unit. Wilson's teammate, GW running back Tahron Goods, was also named to the First Team on offense. In addition, both Wilson and Goods were named to the First Team on defense with Wilson being cited for his efforts as a defensive back and Goods being cited at the linebacker position.
