Bardstown's boys opened the season with a dominant 1-0 win Tuesday at Spencer County.

"Defensively, we were outstanding," Tigers coach Aaron Boggs said, noting the Bears only attempted three shots on goal the whole game.

The Tigers finally snapped the scoreless tie with about eight minutes left to play, when sophomore Paul Lanham got loose in front of the Spencer goal, and punched it in off an assist by senior Stephen Pis.

Pis was dribbling on the left side, and was going to take the shot himself, Boggs said. But Lanham flashed open and Pis made the cross-pass for the only goal the Tigers would need.

"I was impressed with our play," Boggs said, "but we had trouble putting the ball in the back of the net."

The Tigers attempted 29 shots on goal, Boggs said, and the "midfielders controlled the game well" by giving the Tigers plenty of opportunities to score.

"We've got a lot to learn about picking up the speed of the game," he said, something that will come in time once the inexperienced squad gets used to each other.

Bardstown hosted Fort Knox Thursday in a game after press time.
