Bethlehem overcame a slow start on the road Tuesday to beat Bardstown in volleyball, 25-15, 25-13.

“They came out flat a little bit,” Bethlehem coach Brian Burba said.

Bethlehem got the initial lead in the first set, but six straight points, including three consecutive aces, off the serve of Jessie Wathen staked Bardstown to a 9-5 lead, forcing a Banshee time out.

The time out swung the momentum back toward Bethlehem, as the Banshees tied it back up.

“We got a little bit of a lead, and our heads got in the way,” Tiger coach Wes Robertson said. “We started worrying about losing.”

The teams played evenly from there and were still tied at 14, but Bethlehem outscored Bardstown 11-1 to finish out the set.

In the second set, Bardstown again kept Bethlehem close in the early going. But the Banshees imposed their will on the front line to turn an 8-7 lead into a 20-9 lead, and cruised home from there.

“We want to improve every night,” Robertson said. “We’re getting there.”

Bardstown (0-3) hosted Bullitt Central and Bethlehem (2-0) visited Fort Knox in a pair of matches Thursday after press time.

Bardstown hosts Washington County Tuesday, while Bethlehem hosts Green County.
