BILL NORRIS SPECIAL TO THE STANDARD

Bardstown grabbed a key district win Wednesday, getting a pair of first-half goals and making them stand up in a 2-0 road win at Bethlehem.

The Tigers got on the board in the 21st minute on a penalty kick. Bethlehem was called for a handball infraction inside the 18-yard box, and Maggie Whitfield put the ball by a diving Sara Wigginton for a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal given up by the Banshees this season.

Later in the half, Lynsday Spalding added to the lead when she knocked down a clearing attempt by Bethlehem and sprinted down the right side, gathered in the ball and punched it past Wigginton for a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute.

Bardstown continued its strong performance in the second half as the defense picked it up a notch and the Tigers time and again winning the loose balls and creating opportunities for the offense.

Bethlehem was unable to get many opportunities to get a shot on goal, and when it did, Bardstown goalkeeper Laura Wathen was there for the stop.

“It was a good win,” Bardstown coach Martin Bodkin said. “I thought we were the better side but we still need to work on gelling as a team. Defensively, I thought we looked solid.”

The win pushes the Tigers’ record to 3-1, and they host Bullitt Central Monday.

Bethlehem drops to 3-1 after its first loss of the season; the Banshees visit Nelson County Monday.
