Ashe Volleyball Season Ends

After sealing up fourth place in the Mountain Valley, the Huskies' volleyball team was on the road to open up the NCHSAA Playoffs on Saturday. The Huskies, as the last seeded MVAC team, drew a road bid against Mt Pleasant, the number one seed from the Rocky River Conference, and drew a tough match up.
The Huskies lost to Mt Pleasant with a 3-0 score, although the match up featured two evenly matched teams.
"We did not play bad," Coach Laura Foster elaborated, "we just did not play good enough. Mt Pleasant is a good solid volleyball team. They are very fundamental, obviously well coached."
The victory moved Mt Pleasant's record to an impressive 22-3.
The match opened up with game one being all Mt Pleasant, as the Tigers were able to pull ahead one game to none with a 25-13 victory.
Games two and three were closer of a contest for the two teams, with the game scores being 25-23 in both game two and three, in favor of the Tigers.
The match concluded the season for the Huskies, and concluded the career of six seniors for the Huskies. Sara Bumgarner, Natasha Faw, Annie Hegar, Kim McNeil, Carmen Wagner and Kendra Yearick were the seniors on this year's squad. "This group of seniors will definitely be missed next year. They are a great group of young ladies, that I have enjoyed coaching."
The match on Saturday was a long haul for the Huskies, both metaphorically and literally. The drive to Mt Pleasant was over two and a half hours for the Huskies, which is substantial enough that if the tables was turned, with Mt Pleasant driving up to Ashe County, that Ashe could have easily won. But also, the first time Ashe received an automatic bid into the NCHSAA Playoffs under Coach Laura Foster's direction.
Ashe finished with an 11-10 overall record on the season, and the matches that Ashe lost was to high caliber opponents. Of their MVAC losses, all three teams remain in the NCHSAA Playoffs (Starmount, North Surry, Forbush).
"We had a very good season," Foster elaborated. "The matches we lost were to quality teams; every team we lost to have won over 15 games and made it into the post-season."
Coach Foster summed up the season with the general comment, "This was a very enjoyable season." |
