Rams Defeat the Wildcats

September 3, 2008
By Patti Harrell of Vardaman High School

Thursday, August 28, when Vardaman's new coach, Justin Hollis, took the field with his team, much was at stake for the Rams.  This was Coach Hollis' first game as a head coach.  Vardaman had a new quarterback and several new plays.  Adding to the anxiety of testing everything new, Vardaman took the field against a long-standing rival, the Calhoun City Wildcats.

The stands grew instantly quiet as the Wildcats returned the opening kick-off for a touchdown.  To add to mounting anxiety, the Rams offense struggled during the first half.  However, the defense held the Wildcats to only twelve points.

Coach Hollis worked a little magic in the locker room during half-time.  The Rams re-entered the game with a vigor that the Wildcats could not match.  With the crowd frequently on its feet, the Rams showed the Wildcats that they, too, could dominate the field.  The Rams offense scored three touchdowns during the second half while the defense rendered the Wildcats powerless to answer.

The Rams defeated their inner-county rival 21 to 12 midst the roar of the crowd and the peal of cannon-fire.  Ram fans anxiously expect more great things to come.

The Rams will play their other inner-county rival, the Bruce Trojans, this coming Thursday night at Bruce.  We hope to see you there.
