Football: Hertford County - Postgame Observations

November 21, 2009
By Kevin McCloskey of Western Alamance High School

My Mama always told me there would be days like this.  Days when absolutely nothing goes your way and you just have to suck-it-up, hold your head high, and have faith that the sun will come up tomorrow.

Nine WA turnovers by my count.  NINE!  I don't think any team in the history of football (from pee-wees to the NFL) can expect to win (or even come close) when you turn the ball over nine times.  And its just so sad that this seaon had to end on such a bad note.  This team deserved better.

Things started of pretty decent for the Warriors.  WA won the toss and elected to kickoff.  As you might expect, the Warriors gambled and tried to surprise HC with an onside kick but it did not work.  So HC got the ball in great field position but the Warrior defense held tight.  The high-powered Bear offense was stymied and faced a long third down.  Petey Boone's pass fell incomplete and the Warrior Nation was alive and boisterous.  Five seconds later....  Here comes the yellow flag.  A very late flag.  Pass interference on WA.  Automatic first down.  A few plays later...  Touchdown Bears.

But WA responded and did it quickly.  A long pass put WA deep in HC territory.  After a penalty and couple of short gains, Dominique Bridges threw a touchdown pass to to tie the score at 7 apiece.

So far...  So good.   Unfortunately for the Warriors, however, that is as good as it would get.   HC responded with another score.  WA began turning the ball over on seemingly every possession.  I believe we had 6 turnovers by halftime and the game was quickly out of reach.

Its late and I'm tired and there's not much more to say about the game itself.   But I do want to make it a point to recognize this senior class.  This class for which the so-called "experts" did not expect to do well.   But they stood tall and surprised everyone (except themselves) with a tremendous season!   Great job guys!

And one person in particular I want to recognize...  Dominique Bridges.  Lets not sugarcoat things.  Tonight was not Domique's best night in a Warrior uniform and Dominique was noticably upset following the game.   Young man...  Hold your head high!  You did an outstanding job this season.  You started the year as an "athlete" playing the QB position.  By the end of the year, you were a true QB who just happens to be a great athlete.  You had a great year and thank you for all of your contributions.

Sorry if this is rambling and has some typos.  I'll try to add more tomorrow (later today I should say).   Pictures coming soon.  Video to be uploaded on Saturday afternoon.
