Butler's challenge

November 3, 2009
North Carolina

By Langston Wertz Jr.
Charlotte Observer

MATTHEWS
- Butler High football player Nate Charest and teammates will try to pull off a rare feat Friday night.

The Bulldogs (9-0, 5-0 Southwestern 4A), ranked No.1 in the Sweet 16, play at No.2 Independence (10-0, 5-0). Butler beat Independence 21-20 in 2007, and no team has beaten the Patriots twice since Tom Knotts started coaching at the school in 2000.

Since that time, Independence is 146-5, losing to Boiling Springs Crest (2000), Cincinnati Elder (2007), Butler (2007), New Bern (2007) and Richmond Senior (2008). The Patriots are one win away from their eighth undefeated regular season in nine years.

Charest, who plays safety and wide receiver, relishes the chance to stop his school's primary rival.
