Bunn best Panthers
October 7, 2009 Bunn High School
| | By: Franklin Times Staff Reports
| | | BUNN -- The Bunn Wildcats continue to frustrate foes with their almost-dizzying array of offensive weapons.
Bunn's gamebreakers were out in full force last Friday as the Wildcats scored eight touchdowns on their way to a 48-21 victory over visiting North Johnston in BHS' first Northern Carolina Conference game.
The Wildcats, coached by Chris Miller, upped their mark to 4-2 overall.
Bunn collected 429 total yards, including 330 on the ground. Scottie Harrison paced BHS' rushing attack with 166 yards on just 10 carries.
Teammate Richard Dunston had 63 yards on 13 carries, while quarterback Montrel Cooke accounted for 117 total yards (28 on the ground and 89 through the air.
"Our backs played really well,'' Miller said. "They ran hard. I just think we can play a little better up front on both sides of the ball. And we were not as disciplined on defense as we need to be.''
It didn't take long for Bunn to get going as the Wildcats cracked the scoreboard on their first series, thanks to a 2-yard plunge from Dominic High.
The PAT failed, but Bunn was out early at 6-0 at the 5:46 mark of the initial stanza.
North Johnston countered with a Laquan Cox TD run to take its lone lead of the game, but Cooke delivered a 7-yard run with just 59 seconds left in the first quarter to send Bunn ahead for good at 14-7.
Cooke was in the end zone again on a 2-yard TD midway through the second period, and Bunn was up 21-7.
But on NJ's next play from scrimmage, Jacques Alston broke away on an 80-yard scoring scamper to bring the Panthers to within 21-14.
Bunn, however, would all but end the suspense with two more first-half touchdowns, beginning with a 9-yard run from Dunston with 3:49 to play before the break.
After Bunn recovered a fumble, Harrison scored from 20 yards out, and the Wildcats went to halftime with a commanding 36-14 edge.
Cox scored from three yards out for NJ at the midpoint of the third period, but Bunn had an answer when Robert Preston caught a 13-yard scoring reception from Cooke at the 1:58 mark of the frame.
The final score of the outing came courtesy of Cooke's 13-yard escape with 5:58 remaining.
Alston had a big night for North Johnston, rushing for 250 yards on 16 carries.
"North Johnston has a good football team,'' Miller said. "Alston is for real -- he is probably the best running back we'll see this year. I think you will see them make some noise in the conference.''
Bunn will remain home this coming Friday to celebrate homecoming against the Northwest Halifax Vikings in another key NCC game.
BHS scored a lopsided decision last fall over the Vikes, who eventually finished in second place in the conference. Northwest will enter the event with one league setback -- two weeks ago to Franklinton.
"(NWH) just likes to pound you,'' Miller said. "I would imagine they will come down here pretty upset (after last year's game). They've always got some good athletes.'' |
