Always call your coach, or the head athletic trainer before going to a doctor or emergency room, unless it is an emergency. III. For all sports related injuries, you should do the following first aid treatment at home: REST: Stay off of or don't use the injured part without checking with an athletic trainer first. ICE: Use an ice bag or bucket for 10 to 20 minutes, at least 4 times a day. COMPRESSION: Use an elastic wrap for support and to control swelling. ELEVATION: Raise the injured part to reduce swelling. IV. Use of Heat on Injuries: Never use heat on an injury without checking with a doctor, therapist or athletic trainer first. Many times heat will do more harm than good. V. Never attempt to move another player when they are down, and never try to remove another players clothing, helmet, or equipment when they are injured. All football players are required to weigh in and out before and after every practice. The other sports do not do this, but you can check yourself at home every night and every morning to see if you are gaining back the fluid weight that you lost during practice. C. Drink a lot of fluids with your meals, especially breakfast. Also, drink a lot before going out to practice. You can't drink too much.
