Tigers Defeat Salisbury

September 2, 2009
By TJ Young of Scotland Co High School

"A tail of two halves" is how head coach Brent Bondurant would describe Friday night's contest with the Salisbury Panthers.  The Tigers came up with a turnover early in the first quarter and converted it into six points on a Sabe Sears 2-yard run.  The ensuing PAT failed.

Following a Kyle Shelley interception in Salisbury territory, the Tigers converted a 27-yd Field Goal by Harley Stone to take a 9-0 lead midway through the first quarter.  Those three points would prove to be the difference in the game.

Early in the second quarter, the Tigers engineered a drive to the Salisbury 9-yd line.  Sabe Sears would then connect with Harley Stone for another score to take a 15-0 lead into halftime.

The second half was dominated by the offensive and defensive line play of Salisbury.  Salisbury scored on a 3-yd bootleg with 2:43 left to play in quarter number three to make the score 15-6.  Kyle Shelley and Justin Winn combined to block the PAT.  That is how the score would stand until :33 left to play in the game when the Salisbury defense gobbled up a Tiger fumble and scamper 20-yds for a late touchdown.  The Panthers two-point conversion failed making the score 15-12 in favor of SC.  Scotland County recovered the on-side kick to solidify the victory.

Turnovers were key on the night as SC came up with three interceptions and recovered a fumble.  However, coach Bondurant is concerned with the lack of intensity that his offensive line came out with in the second half.  "I thought we had a good halftime plan of execution lined up for our offense going into the third quarter of play.  Salisbury simply took it to us in the second half up front," stated Bondurant.  "We must be able to put four quarters of good football together in the future, especially with our upcoming opponents."

With the victory, the Tigers win their first home game since the 2007 season in a homecoming win over Fayette.

Next on the schedule for Scotland County is the defending 2A State Champions Clark County.  Game time is 7:00 pm on the 4th of September at Tiger Field.
