Wildcats advance in State Playoffs

The West Stokes Wildcats hosted the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders in the first round of the 2A East Baseball State Playoffs tonight in King, NC. Freshman Amos Wilmoth knocked in the winning run with an infield hit and gave the Wildcats a 4-3 victory. West Stokes took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning on Brian Allen's 2-run homerun. The Wildcats tacked on another run in the first and led 3-0 going into the second. The Crusaders bounced back and hit a 2-run homerun in the top of the second inning and then scored an unearned run in the fourth to knot the score at three.
In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Jacob Nunn led the inning off with a double to right-center field. With one out, Nunn took third on a wild pitch and then scored on Wilmoth's heroic hit for the win. Mike Lucas secured the win with 11-strikeouts and 2-walks on 6-hits. Zack Fleshman was 3-for-3 with a run scored.
The Wildcats improved to 18-5 overall and will face Roanoke Rapids on Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 PM. Cardinal Gibbons ended their season at 17-8. |
