May 2, 2014By Jon Boultinghouse of Apollo High School
On Wednesday, April 30, the Eagle baseball team traveled to Breckenridge County for a varsity baseball contest. Apollo capitalized on its scoring opportunities to pull out a 3-1 victory.
The Tigers did out-hit Apollo seven to six, but Breckenridge Co. stranded eight runners on base. Apollo would not relinquish the lead as Breckenridge County was unable to weather a three-run fifth inning deficit. Breckenridge County scored one run in the fifth on an RBI single by Sutton. Still, the Tigers couldn't catch Apollo.
Jacob Sumner got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed one run over five innings. Jacob struck out three, walked two and gave up seven hits.
The lead stayed with Apollo after the first, when it scored two runs on a two-run double by Zach Hopewell.
The lone run of the game for Breckenridge County crossed the plate in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Sutton.
