March 24, 2014By Jon Boultinghouse of Apollo High School
Apollo exploded for 5 runs in the 6th to break open the game and defeat Christian County 9-2 on Saturday, March 22 at Eagle Park.
Nate Hopewell racked up four RBIs on two hits for Apollo. He doubled in the fourth inning and blasted a 3-run homer in the sixth inning.
The Colonels couldn't get anything going as long as Josh Owens was on the mound. Christian County managed just one hit off of the Apollo pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out four during his three innings of work.
Eric Powell took the loss for Christian County. He lasted five innings, walked one, struck out two, and allowed four runs.
Christian County did jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Colonel attack began with a single from Sam Blane. The scoreboard lit up again when Barnett scored on a wild pitch.
Apollo pushed across one run in both the first inning and the fourth. In the first, Apollo scored on a fielder's choice, bringing home John Mark Thompson.
The game's last lead went to Apollo thanks to the fifth inning rally that saw two runs cross the plate on two errors and the home run by Hopewell.
