Pisgah's Holley Named 2011 Miss Softball

Pisgah High School catcher Shelby Holley has been named by the Alabama Sports Writers Association 2011 Miss Softball.

Holley set the single-season and career national home run records this season en route to leading Coach Billy Duncan's Eagles to the Class 3A state championship.

Holley belted 35 home runs as a senior to beat the state and national record held by former Pisgah standout Holly Currie, who was named the ASWA's inaugural Miss Softball in 2003. Currie also held the national and state career records with 61 homers from 2000-03 and still holds several national and state pitching records.

The slugger finished with 78 homers in her five-year career to set the state record, but since national records include only freshman through senior year totals, her new national record is officially 72 home runs.

Class 4A Hitter of the Year Kaitlyn Griffith of Cherokee County moved into second-place in state and national single-season totals with 27 home runs during the 2011 season.
