"What's Happening" Around Northwest Alabama

Apr 25---Bevill State will host a Community College Month Celebration and Financial Aid Seminar on April 25th. Join college staff at 4pm for food, fun, and activities. At 6pm, staff will be on hand to discuss financing a college education, assist with financial aid forms and register for summer classes. For event details, visit the college website at bscc.edu

Apr 25---The Winfield Public Library will host Story Hour for Children on April 25th at 330pm. Children from the entire area are invited

Apr 25---On Thursday April 25th the Marion County Domestic Violence Task Force will meet at noon at Oh Bryan's in Hamilton. The evening meeting will be at 530pm at the Winfield Community Center in conjunction with Safeplace program on healthy relationships

Apr 25---Join Safeplace and the Marion County Domestic Violence Task Force for a program on Healthy Relationship Tips for parents and teen at 530pm on Thursday April 25th at the Winfield Community Center. Apr 25---The Lynn Church of God is hosting the Community Evangelistic Extravaganza on most Thursday evenings throughout March and April. Everyone is welcome to attend services t 7pm and intercessory prayer at 6:30pm. The church is located one block south of Traders and Farmers Bank in Lynn on Alabama Highway 5. Guest ministers and music are: April 4---Aaron Gann, Russellville Church of God Praise Team.....April 18---Jimmy Hamaker, Joppa Church of God Praise Team.....and April 25---Henry Quizenberry

Apr 26---The second round of the Baseball Playoffs will be this Friday at the Pirates Cove in Winfield...Winfield will host Cordova at 5:00pm, 7:30pm [and third game would be Saturday at 2pm, if necessary].  Come out and Pack The Park...Wear your Pirate shirts...bring your SPIRIT and support the Pirates.

Apr 27---The Pebble Bluegrass Festival sponsored by and held at the Pebble Community Center in Haleyville will be April 26 & 27, rain or shine. All proceeds goes to the Pebble Community Center.  This will be a weekend of good clean family entertainment.  Entertainers include The Sparks Family, The Huntley Sisters, Knee Deep Bluegrass nd Wayne Jerrolds & Savanna Grass. All bands and pickers welcome.  BBQ & Smoked Chicken supper will be held 4-7pm on Saturday. Concessions will be available...Free camping in rough...No drugs or alcohol allowed.  Camping hookups with water and electricity $10 a day...Admission is $10 for the weekend, $5 for friday at 7pm until, $7 for Saturday 1pm-until...ages 6-12 $2, under 6 free with adult...

Apr 27---The City of Hamilton will have a We Love Hamilton Clean Up Day Saturday April 27th [rain date Saturday May 4th]. All volunteers meet at the Hamilton United Methodist Church where there will be a FREE Hamilton Lions Club pancake breakfast from 6-8am. Cleanup will be held after breakfast.  Bring gloves, safety vests or hats, water and buckets...Garbage bags will be provided.  Also a citywide curbside cleanup with free curbside services will be April 29-May 3rd where residential customers in the city limits can have free pick-up of unwanted items around your home.  This includes household furniture, appliances, water heaters, mattresses, rolled up carpet, large toys, empty refrigerators, empty freezers, brush limb [less than 8 feet long and less that 6 inches in diameter]. For pickup or more information, call Amy at Hamilton City Hall at 921-2121.

Apr 28---Pastor Appreciation Day will be held at the Guin Church of God, Sunday.  Services at 10am with guest speaker Bobby Joe Dupree. Lunch at noon. Located on Hwy 43 north of Guin on the right. Everyone welcome.  For more info contact Pastor Sonny Cummings at 495-0568

May 1---There will be a Swamp John's dinner Wednesday May 1st in the SuperValu Parking lot in Hamilton, 3:00-6:00pm. Plates will be $10. Sponsored by Bethlehem UMC Youth

May 2---The Hamilton Civitan Club members are pre-selling Vidalia onions. Purchase 10 pounds for $11 from any Civitan member or call Pat Duke at 921-7435. Onions will be picked up at First Naitonal Bank Main Office on May 2nd. Proceeds will be used to support local community projects

May 3---The Thomas Dunavant Family is selling Krispy Kreme Doughnuts to help support the Annual Thomas Dunavant Memoril Scholarship awarded each year to a graduating senior at Hubbertville High School. Doughnuts will be delivered to the Hubbertville School Pavilion on Friday May 3rd and available for pick-up at 3:15pm. Cost per box is $5. To purchase call Allen at 487-6053 or Shirley at 487-3627. Doughnuts will also be sold during the 13 mile yard sale on Saturday May 4th next to the Hubbertville Lion's Club Cook-out located at B&M Grocery

May 4---There will be a fundraiser for 4 year old Preston Johnson who is taking chemo treatments, May 4th at the Winfield Community Center from 4-7pm.  They will be selling Steak or Chicken plates cooked by Big Jerry's Grillin.  Steak plates $12, Chicken plates $10

May 4---The 13 Mile Yard Sale will be the first weekend of May on Highway 129 from Glen Allen to Lawrence Mill. For space rental or info call Bobbie at 487-4436

May 6---There will be a blood drive Monday May 6th 9am-1pm at the Red Bay School

May 7---There will be blood drives Tuesday May 7th 830am-200pm at the Lamar County High School in Vernon and that same day 9am-2pm at the Lynn High School in Lynn

May 9---The Winfield Touchdown Club is hosting a Big Jerry's Cookout on Thursday May 9th at the Winfield Community Center. Lunch will be served from 11-1 and dinner will be served from 4-7. Proceeds will be used to support the football program and to help fund Cheerleader and Football scholarships that will be given out on Awards Day.  Winfield Football players, Cheerleaders and Booster Club members will be selling tickets. Steak plates will be $12 and Grilled Chicken plates $10. Lunch plates will be delivered starting at 10:30am to local businesses for orders of ten or more. As you know we have a new football coach, David McKinney. Coach McKinney ploans to be at the cookout so he can meet parents and friends of Winfield Football, so come out for great food and fellowship. May 22---There will be a singing at the First Baptist Church of Guin May 22nd at 630pm. Guest singers will be The Hyssongs. They have quite a few songs that have been in the Top 40l. Everyone is invited. Admission is free, a love offering will be taken

May 25---The Brilliant Coalfest will be May 24th and 25th. Friday starts at 5pm and all day on Saturday.  There will be a Car Show, Motorcycle Ride, Horse Shoe Tournament, Arts & Crafts, Checker Games with Larry Pollard, Clogging, Coal Mining rtifcts display and Kids Activities and a Lot More!  Entertainment include on Friday night, Rollin in the Hay and Lloyd Moses...on Saturday Joseph Baldwin, Mojo Trio, Dixie Cocks feturing Wayne Mills, Josh Newcom nd Kyle Wilson, Tremayne, and the Whiskey River Band.  For info call 465-2281

Jun 1---Mac McAnally will be in concert at the historic PastimeTheatre in Winfield on Saturday night June 1st at 7pm. Doors open at 6.  Mac McAnally is a song writer, producer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and all around musical sage. He was named the CMA Musician of the Year for the past five years in a row and has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has written songs including "Back Where I Come From", "All These Years", "Old Flame" and may more for Hank Williams Jr, Kenny Chesney, Alabama, Jimmy Buffett, Reba McEntire, Randy Travis, and others. He currently tours with Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band. Tickets are $30. The show is sure to be a sell-out, so get your tickets early. Dinner will offered at 5pm for an additional $15. TFN---The Hubbertville Lions Club is selling broom and mops as a fundraiser. See any Lions Club member in Hubbertville or stop by B&M Grocery.

TFN---The Community Action Partnership Head Start Program is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 school year. Head Start is open to children ages 3-5. Head Start is a Federal Program that provides quality services for children and families who qualify within Federal Income Guidelines at no cost to the parents. To apply parents must bring: Alabama Blue Slip [immunization card]...Birth Certificate...Social Security Cars...Verification of Income for 2011...Medicaid or Insurance Card.
