Six Unbeatens Advance To Quarterfinal Playoff Round
Six unbeaten teams and two defending state champions survived the second round of the AHSAA state football playoffs to advance to the quarterfinal round. Forty-eight teams advanced, eight in each of the six classes. All games will be played Friday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m.
Defending Class 1A champion Marion County (11-1) beat R.A. Hubbard Friday to set up a Region 5 rematch against fourth-seed Hubbertville (9-3) at Guin. The other two Region 5 qualifiers, Berry (8-4) and Pickens County (10-2), also won and will play at Reform. This guarantees one of the teams will play in the Super 6 finals at Auburn.
In Class 3A, all four qualifiers from Region 8 also posted wins to set up rematches and a guarantee that one of the four will play in the Super 6 championship game. Top seed Madison Academy (10-2), which reached the finals last season, will host Colbert County (8-4) and second-seed Lauderdale County (11-1) will play Deshler (9-3) at Rogersville in the other contest.
Class 1A Brantley (12-0), Class 2A Tanner (11-0), Class 4A Oneonta (12-0), Class 5A McAdory (12-0) and Muscle Shoals (12-0), and Class 6A Hoover (12-0) advanced with second-round wins to set up this week’s matchups. Brantley goes to Linden (11-1), Tanner is at Fultondale (10-2), Oneonta travels to Huntsville to face J.O. Johnson (11-1) at Milton Frank Stadium, McAdory hosts Cullman (10-2), Muscle Shoals hosts defending 5A state champion Hartselle (8-4) and Hoover goes to Vestavia Hills (10-2).
Four previously unbeaten teams were eliminated in round two – Cedar Bluff (1A), Fyffe (2A), Piedmont (3A) and McGill-Toolen (6A).
The semifinals are slated for Friday, Nov. 30, and the Super 6 state finals will be Dec. 6-7 at Jordan-Hare Stadium on the campus of Auburn University. Classes 1A, 3A and 5A will play on Thursday (Dec. 6) and Classes 2A, 4A and 6A will play on Friday (Dec. 7).
