2012 Ashland Tomcat Baseball Spring Break Florida Trip Diary

By AJ "Doc" Stadelmeyer

Friday March 30th  4:00 PM

So this will be the start of a diary that I hope to continue throughout of spring berak trip to Cocoa Beach Florida to play baseball. I am really excited to be leaving soon; we plan to pull out at 9:00 PM and drive all night on our chartered bus to Florida.  25 kids, 7 adults and lots of coolers full of water and Gatorade. I have the athletic training room stuff packed and I will be headed home soon to pack my personal stuff. I have my Speedos, my straw Jimmy Buffett hat, and my SP 60 suntan lotion (kind of like motor oil) ready to go. I plan to keep updating this diary through out the week in Florida, so check back soon.

Saturday March 31st 10:45 PM

Well we got here safely. Stopped on way down in Beckley, WV, had breakfast at McDonalds in Savannah, GA, then got bogged down by traffic around an accident on I 95 and bad weather. Tonight we went to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch UK beat up Louisville. Go Big Blue.
The guys are all snuggled in their beds now, getting rested for a big day of games tomorrow.  Hopefully my room mate PJ Profitt doesn't snore too much. I miss my beautiful wife, but PJ and Dwight will be ok for a week. Talk to ya'll tomorrow.

 Sunday April 1st: 7:40 AM

Tomcat Trip Is Cancelled Due To Severe Weather. Headed Home. Poop!!!!

Sunday April 1st 7:45 AM

April Fools.  Tomcats are up and ready to play. We are not coming home at all.  70 degrees, sunny.  Great day for Tomcat Baseball.  The lizards are running, seagulls flying and soon the Cats will be playing ball.  Good morning Tomcat Nation.

Sunday April 1st 2:35 PM

Tomcats beat Franklin, Tennessee 2 - 1. Cade OBryan hit a 2 run double in the 6th, and Logan Salow and Jake Hall pitched for the Tomcats. The JV lost 4 - 8 to Franklin, and we are now leaving for a JV game against Raceland at 4:00 PM.

Sunday April 1st 7:30 PM

The JV Cats beat Raceland 14 - 10 in a game where we led the Rams 10 - 2 in the 3rd inning. Our pitching faltered a little, but we hung on and defeated Raceland to improve our JV record to 4 - 1. While the JV played, the varsity guys took batting practice in the cages. I survived being hit with a loose ball in my belly, then getting pegged in the head by another ball in an assasination attemppt by coach Walter. The team is hanging out by the pool at the hotel now, waiting for Papa Johns pizza arrive. We will have meetings at about 9:30 PM, then go to bed to get rested for two games against a tough Williamsburg KY team tomorrow.

Monday April 2nd 9:45 AM

Good morning Tomcat Nation. The varsity folks got to sleep in a little; the JV is playing now against Williamsburg, KY. We are leaving to join them shortly, and will play a varsity game against Williamsburg at noon. Good nights sleep, good omlet for breakfast and another great Florida weather day.

Monday April 2nd 7:45 PM

Great day for Ashland baseball.  The varsity Cats beat Williamsburg, KY 10-1 and the JV Cats beat Williamsburg 12-0. Sam Hunter got the win for the Tomcats, and Stewart, Hunter, Elam and Salow all hit doubles in the win. Hunters base clearing double resulted in 3 RBI's. Had a great dinner at Olive Garden. Getting ready for the UK vs Kansas game. Go Big Blue!!!

Tuesday April 3rd 10:45 PM

What a great day. After last nights UK basketball national championship, we were all in a great mood. We played 4 tough games today; the varsity lost a hard fought battle with an outstanding Hiram Georgia team 7 -  5, but bounced back to defeat Franklin, Tennessee 11 - 10. We got outstanding pitching performances from Evan Yongue, Evan Cox and Aaron Elam, and Logan Salow and Cade OBryan stayed hot at the plate. The JV lost to Franklin Tenneessee 12 - 0, then recovered to beat Williamsburg 12 - 1. After the games we went to our annual cookout at the resort that our parents stay at, then we went shopping at Merritt Island Mall, and went to the movies as a team to see Wrath of the Titans. Now we are relaxing, watching the womens final 4, and getting ready for our day off tomorrow.

Wednesday April 4th 2:30 PM

Day off...whew. The players all took off with the parents to the beaches and Disney Worl this morning. So the coaching staff slept in, then we went to the beach. Ate at Pizza Hut, went to Ron John Surf Shop, checked out the beach (it was packed solid with people), went to Walgreens for snacks and now we are pool side at the hotel. We get to relax until the kids are back at 10:00 tonight.  In case you wondered, the ocean is still big and wet, full of waves with sand on the beach. Hasn't changed much in thousands of years...LOL.

Thursday April 5th 5:00 PM

Good day for the Tomcat Nation. The Cats demolished Williamsburg, KY 10 - 0 in 5 innings behind the outstanding pitching of Logan Salow. Salow threw a complete game striking out 13 batters for the shutout win. Both JV games today were cancelled (Raceland decided to head home yesterday and forfieted several games and Williamsburg didnt want to play the JV game with us). The team is eating lunch on their own, and we are going to TGI Fridays tonight for a team meal. Then we will start loading the bus for our trip home tomorrow following our varsity game with Apollo.

Sunday April 8th 4:00 PM

What a successful Florida trip we had! The varsity team went 4-2, only losing to the two best teams in Florida, and the JV team went 5 - 2 with two forfeit wins. We made it home safely, getting home about 5:00 AM Saturday morning. After taking Saturday off, its back to work today getting ready for a tough week of games this week. Keep checking our IHigh site as I get Florida pictures loaded. If anyone has pictures that they want to contribute to our site, bring them to me on a disk or zip drive, and I can get them loaded for you. Thanks to all the parents that were in Florida that helped us out with things like Gatorade, laundry and our team beach picnic, and to everyone who helped to finance this trip. I think both tems got better in Flordia, and now we are ready to make a run at another 16th region title. See you at the ball park soon.  Doc
